Biography
Illustrious Sir John M. Brett comes from a military background. His father had a commendable career in the Air Force and John followed in the same service. After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a Major in Accounting and a Minor in Finance, he accepted a commission and attended pilot training. His first assignment was as a squadron pilot flying a C-130 in the Laotian part of the Southeast Asian conflict. His last military assignment was with the C-130 squadron at McCord AFB, where he was the Chief Pilot. In 1989 this squadron was disbanded and John decided it was time to leave the service. He then spent several years flying for a contract freight air carrier. In this position he spent most of his time flying food relief in several different countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Eventually he was hired by the United Nations to establish, manage and fly an air drop food relief program in the war-torn country of Liberia.

John married his high school sweetheart, Sandra LeSuer, and he later discovered both families are well founded in Masonic history. Several generations on all sides of both families have been members of the fraternity and numerous affiliated and concordant bodies.

John began his Masonic path about twenty years ago when he petitioned Fairweather Lodge in Tacoma. Shortly after being raised, he joined the Scottish Rite, all three bodies of York Rite and Afifi Shrine. John’s list of dues cards is not limited to, but includes, the Pacific Council of the Allied Masonic Degrees, Masonic Society of Rosicrucians, Red Cross of Constantine, the Orders of Quetzalcoatl and the Jesters, the Scottish Rite Research Society and the Royal Order of Scotland,. He is an enthusiastic writer and has had four articles published in national Masonic magazines and an additional two published in Washington State Masonic publications.

Several Masonic organizations have elected or appointed John to positions of leadership and responsibility. One of his most notable projects was twelve years as a Board Member of the Scottish Rite of Washington’s Rite Care charity. Within this organization he chaired several committees including the Investment Committee tasked with control of several million dollars of invested money in three active accounts and monitoring over eight million dollars in trust and estate money destined to the charity.

John has been active in Afifi since his initiation. He joined First Section and was the Director for six years while he served as the Divan’s Director of Units for three years. John is optimistic and enthusiastic about this year with its active schedule and hopes to assist Afifi Shrine building “Bridges to the Future”.
